CFP: Roundtable for 2013 AAS: Voices from East Asia: Integrating
non-English scholarship into the global academia

Dear H-Asia Colleagues,

I'm Liu Wennan, editor of Journal of Modern Chinese History, at
Institute of Modern History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. I'm
organizing a roundtable for 2013 AAS annual meeting in San Diego with
the working title "Voices from East Asia: Integrating non-English
scholarship into the global academia." We will discuss the challenges
and possibilities to achieve greater scholarly communications across
the various linguistic domains of traditional East Asian studies. We
will use the Journal of Modern Chinese History at the Institute of
Modern History, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Frontier of
History in China edited by Prof. Wang Di, Chinese Studies in History
edited by Prof. Wang Qingjia Edward, and Cross-Currents, a new
print/online multi-lingual academic journal at UC Berkeley, as
examples to talk about the current efforts and future plans. I hope
we can have scholars/scholars who share the same concern and would
like to join the discussion on behalf of voices from Japan and Korea.

If you are interested in joining us, please contact me at
wennan@gmail.com with one or two sentences to describe the message
you want to share at the roundtable, by July 27th. Thank you for your
consideration

Best regards,
Liu Wennan

Subject: H-ASIA: Seeking contributors to a Jain art exhibition catalogue

H-ASIA
July 23, 2012

Seeking contributors to a catalogue of a planned exhibition of Jain
art at the Art Gallery of South Australia
***********************************************************************
From: Peter Mayer <peter.mayer@adelaide.edu.au>

I forward this query to my colleagues on H-ASIA and beyond:

Michael Abbott, AO QC, who is Chairman of the Art Gallery of South
Australia in a recent message has said that the Gallery is proposing
to put on an exhibition of Jain art next year. This would be the
first such exhibition in the Southern Hemisphere. To accompany the
exhibition there would be a scholarly catalogue.

In an supplementary message, James Bennett, the Gallery's Curator of
Asian Art adds: "I am still trying to track down Jain scholars in the
areas of sculpture, manuscripts and textiles. The catalogue aims to
provide a general introduction to the collection rather than be too
much of an esoteric text. Particularly, I am interested in locating
the objects in a wider cultural and spiritual context rather than
merely discuss issues of art history. We will also be including
site and archival photos in the full length publication. Each entry
would only be about 500 words and our deadline is December--so it
ought not be too onerous a task for contributors."

If there are any colleagues who would wish to contribute to the
catalogue, they can contact me, at
(peter.mayer@adelaide.edu.au) and I will forward the information to
James Bennett.

Thank you very much,

Peter
