NBR Q&A on Sustaining Rebalancing in an Era of Fiscal Restraint
***********
From: Tracy Timmons-Gray [ttimmonsgray@nbr.org]

NBR just released a new Q&A with Thomas G. Mahnken (U.S. Naval War
College) that explores how the current debate over U.S. defense spending
may affect the government's "rebalancing" towards Asia. A link to the
full interview and a summary are below:

"Sustaining Rebalancing in an Era of Fiscal Restraint"

Q&A with Thomas G. Mahnken, U.S. Naval War College

Link: http://m.nbr.org/OEcOqs

SUMMARY

In January 2012 the United States announced that it would commence a
strategy of "rebalancing" toward the Asia-Pacific, in light of the
growing geopolitical importance of the region. However, this ambitious
plan comes at a time when the United States finds itself facing severe
financial constraints. In addition to previously announced cuts, the
Department of Defense faces the challenge of implementing additional
cuts required under the 2011 Budget Control Act (sequestration) for a
total of approximately $950 billion in cuts over the next ten years.

NBR asked Thomas G. Mahnken (U.S. Naval War College) about the
prospects of effectively executing and sustaining the U.S. rebalance
during a time of fiscal restraint.

Read the full interview for insights on the following questions:

- What key defense programs, platforms, and weapons systems will the
U.S. need to continue to develop in order to execute a strategic
rebalance toward the Asia-Pacific?

- How do U.S. allies in Asia view the current debate over U.S. defense
spending?

- How will the debate over defense spending and cuts play out in the
2012 U.S. presidential election? Read Now: Sustaining Rebalancing in an
Era of Fiscal Restraint

Member self-introduction; interest in Burma's nats
**********
From: Sally Bamford [sbamford@iprimus.com.au]

Hello all,

My name is Sally Bamford, and I graduated from the Australian National
University last year as an Bachelor of Art History & Curatorship
(Hons.). I first travelled to Burma as an ignorant backpacker in 1995
and since then have been interested in learning more about its art and
history.

At present, I am continuing my research into Burma's nats for a PhD
thesis on their representation in art and material culture, and would be
very appreciative of any information, pictures, stories, contacts and
advice from other list members on this topic. I look forward to hearing
from everyone.

Kind regards
Sally Bamford
